John Littleton And Kate Vogel

b. 1957 • American

Biography

John Littleton and Kate Vogel are prominent American studio glass artists known for their collaborative work since 1979. Born in 1957 and 1956 respectively, they are considered part of the third generation of artists in the American Studio Glass Movement, which traces its origins to the pioneering efforts of Harvey Littleton in the 1960s. John Littleton, the youngest son of Harvey Littleton, initially pursued photography at the University of Wisconsin–Madison before transitioning to glass art. It was there that he met Kate Vogel, who had shifted her focus from two-dimensional art to glass, and the two began their artistic partnership. Their early work is characterized by the creation of glass bag forms, a signature style that brought them significant recognition. Over the years, they have expanded their repertoire to include a series of arms and hands cast in amber-colored glass, often holding various objects such as river stones or colorful glass leaves. More recently, they have gained attention for their functional glass and wrought iron side tables. Littleton and Vogel's work is celebrated for its innovative approach to glass as a medium, and their pieces are highly sought after by collectors for their unique blend of form and function.
