Biography

Jonathan Green is an African-American painter best known for his vibrant depictions of Gullah culture, or the descendants of enslaved Africans who settled between northern Florida and North Carolina in the 19th century. Green utilizes both the aesthetics of his heritage and the abstraction of the human figure as seen in the work of artists such as Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera, creating an almost mythological narrative from his everyday observations. Born on August 9, 1955 in Gardens Corner, SC, Green served in the U.S. Air Force before receiving his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1982. His works are in the collections of the Naples Museum of Art in Florida, the Afro-American Museum of Philadelphia, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, and the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, among others. Green lives and works in Naples, FL.
