In zijn romantische landschappen volgde hij in motiefkeuze en compositie zijn leermeester soms zo nauwkeurig, dat zijn schilderijen wel werden 'omgedoopt' in een Schelfhout. Op aanraden van zijn leermeester maakte hij verschillende studiereizen door Duitsland, België en Zwitserland.
