Julian Chams
Julian Chams is a visual artist from Barranquilla, Colombia based in Brooklyn, NY. Selected solo and group exhibitions include Wave Hill (New York), AC Institute (New York), Consulate of Colombia (New York), XVI and XV Salon Regional de Artistas (Colombia), La Esquina (Kansas City, MO), 50/50 (Kansas City, MO), The Bronx Museum (New York), and Splatterpool (New York). He has been a BRICworkspace resident and a Van Lier Visual Arts Fellow at Wave Hill in New York. Chams’s art practice consists of an idiosyncratic mysticism embodied in rituals where he deals with his own experience with displacement, oppression and trauma. Disparate parts of his experience are embodied in photographs he has taken as well as in items that have become obsolete in his life, but which at some point held meaning, such as socks, hair, seashells, clothing, rocks, and physical remnants of his medical history. By incorporating these deeply personal elements he is wielding vulnerability to cultivate courage, strength and protection.
