Biography

Kal Mansur is known for his translucent and vivid acrylic sculptures, which he has been producing since 2006. His work is unique in its use of diffusion and concealment as compositional elements. Deriving inspiration from sources as diverse as Donald Judd, aeronautic engineering, and biology, Mansur's pieces express a fusion of disparate perspectives into a cohesive, elemental projection. Mansur's acrylic sculptures are defined by a dimensional object made of completely clear and hard-edged plexiglass. He embeds fluorescent pigments into it which project through the edges. He encases the work within translucent acrylic panels that visually change as light strikes their internal elements. This kinetic quality creates a hybrid between geometric abstraction and the economy of form found in minimalism. Mansur's latest works are pigmented and carved epoxy slabs. Their solidity is borne out of a process combining temperature, time, and viscosity. These physical forces result in translucent and topographical objects. The series continues Mansur's exploration of the processes that shape materiality and abstraction.
