Biography

Artist Kathryn Refi was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Maryland Institute College of Art with her B.F.A. and earned her M.F.A. from the University of Georgia. Her work has been included in group shows at Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn, Fe Gallery in Pittsburgh, the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science in Tallahassee, Mixed Greens in New York, the Gibbes Museum in Charleston, and The Contemporary in Atlanta, among many others. Her work has been reviewed in numerous publications including Art in America and Art Papers. She currently resides in Brooklyn, NY. Refi's work addresses the underlying framework of the grid, which is emblematic of reason, the scientific method, and objectivity, and how it relates to the organic nature of life. She is interested in taking this geometric framework and warming it up, personalizing it by applying it to her body, then reshaping, manipulating, and tilting it to create new forms and spaces. Refi plays with the edges of her body to create an elasticity within the imposed structure, seeing how the curves of her form can be rearranged within straight lines.
