Katie Hector
My mixed-media works appropriate motivational colloquialisms, snippets from pop culture, and readily available materials to question and unpack Americaness. Isolated from contextual overlays the “inspirational” statements I employ within the work become philosophically open-ended, vaguely threatening, and morally treacherous. I'm interested in activating imagery and phrases through process and materiality to encourage viewers to contemplate concepts such as good versus evil; weak versus strong. After moving from New York to Los Angeles in May 2020 I began exploring assemblage and object-based works as a new format of story-telling. Found objects, cast-offs, and scraps collected from everyday life reflect frozen moments of personal introspection. These mixed media works also represent my diary during a global pandemic. Hector recently relocated from NYC to LA to pursue her MFA at CalArts this Fall. She received her BFA in painting from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2014. Hector has garnered recognition for her work in the form of awards, scholarships, and shows some of which include: 2020 Lillian Disney Scholarship, 2019 Arquetopia International Residency, 2017 Picture Berlin International Residency, 2016 Merit-Based Scholarship at Urban Glass, 2014 Scott Cagenello Memorial-Prize, and 2013 Ruth Crockett Award. She is also an independent curator and partner at The Royal Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Additionally, Hector's writing has been published through a number of contemporary art forums including: Two Coats of Paint, Artfuse, ANTE Magazine, Maake Magazine and many others.
