Biography

Leon Berkowitz was an influential American artist and educator, born on September 14, 1911, and passing away on August 17, 1987. He is best known for his contributions to the Color Field painting movement, particularly through his series known as The Unities. Berkowitz played a pivotal role in the Washington Color School, a group of artists in the mid-20th century who were known for their bold use of color and abstract forms. However, Berkowitz often distanced himself from the label of the Washington Color School, preferring to define his work on his own terms. Berkowitz co-founded the Washington Workshop Center, which served as both a gallery and a school, fostering a vibrant community of artists and students. His work is characterized by its exploration of light and color, creating immersive experiences that invite viewers to engage deeply with the visual and emotional impact of his paintings. Collectors and art enthusiasts continue to admire Berkowitz's work for its innovative approach to color and its significant role in the development of modern American art.
