Biography

Marc Horowitz (b. 1976, Westerville, OH) works in painting, performance, video, photography, and social practice. Combining traditional drawing, commercial photography, and new media, Horowitz turns American culture on its head to explore the idiosyncrasies of entertainment, class, commerce, failure, success, and personal meaning. Horowitz attended the San Francisco Art Institute (MFA, New Genres, 2001), and the Roski School of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California (MFA, Studio Art, 2012). A Creative Time Project Grant Awardee, Horowitz has taught at the University of Southern California, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Otis College, and lectured at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), the Hammer Museum, Stanford University, and Yale. Recent exhibitions include The Qualitative Validation Principle at Ever Gold [Projects] (solo, San Francisco, 2019); If it’s not mine, it’s mine at Jonathan Hopson (solo, Houston, 2019); Nothing on the Other Side of the Slash at Johannes Vogt (solo, New York, 2019); Petra Cortright & Marc Horowitz at BANK (Shanghai, China, 2018); “‘You can’t do that to them,’ the older, wiser Architect said.” at Ever Gold [Projects] (solo, San Francisco, 2017); Thank you. That was quite illuminating at COMA Gallery (Sydney, Australia, 2017); and INTERIOR, DAY (A DOOR OPENS) at Depart Foundation (solo, Los Angeles, 2015). Horowitz lives and works in Los Angeles.
