Biography

Matthew Hansel's practice playfully assembles varying artistic traditions and tonal registers to create uncanny, luscious, and immersive experiences. The artist overlays classical imagery with surreal elements mined from popular culture, art history and our collective unconscious. Using a mixture of humour and pathos, Hansel creates post-modern images that reflect on the history of art while exploring the flattening of artistic hierarchies in an age where technology has made imagery ubiquitous. Matthew Hansel lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He earned a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art and an MFA from the Yale University school of Art. He has been featured extensively in solo exhibitions, including at The Hole, NY, USA (2021), Brand New Gallery, Milan, Italy (2018) and PM/AM, London, UK (2017). Hansel has also featured in many group shows around the world, including at Wasserman Projects, Detroit, USA (2021), Galerie Droste, Wuppertal, Germany (2020), PLUS-ONE Gallery, Antwerp, Belgium (2019), Sophia Contemporary, London, UK (2018) and Gagosian Gallery, Athens, Greece (2017).
