Melanie Willhide
Biography
Melanie Willhide is a photographer whose practice took a swerve when her computer—containing the archive of her work—was stolen in 2010; when she miraculously recovered the computer with the damaged files, Willhide was inspired to embrace visual glitches and work with digital editing techniques. Before the incident, the artist was a self-described “straight photographer” working mostly with manual cameras and traditional conventions. After, Willhide says that she began to work in partnership with her machine, and to take a more painterly approach to her compositions. The resulting series “To Adrian Rodriguez, with love,” named for the burglar, grafts together two projects featuring late night party debauchery and underwater swimmers in the celebrity pools of Palm Springs.
