Naomi Hobson

b. 1979 • Australian

Biography

Living in Coen, a small township located on the eastern side of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland, Kaantju and Umpila artist Naomi Hobson’s work invokes the tropical landscape of the reefs and rainforests of her immediate surrounds. Her paintings reference not only specific tracts of country, but an intimate experience of it; the light at certain times of the day, shifting sandbanks, and tidal ebbs and flows. I paint in my own personal space where I feel most comfortable, including my back veranda, in the dry river beds, on the banks of my childhood fishing places, as well as at the camp sites that my families have lived and spent time for thousands of years. I will take time to look at the miniature things, the tiny little things that nature hides. Alongside her painting, Naomi works in ceramics and photography. She is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, QAGOMA, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, and the National Gallery of Victoria. Naomi was winner of The Alice Prize in 2016. Profile Image: Naomi Hobson Artwork: Notes From My Country, 2020 © Naomi Hobson, 2020. Photo: Chadwe, Integrated Media, 2020
