Biography
Born in 1910, in Madhya Pradesh, Narayan Shridhar Bendre completed his Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Holkar College, Agra University in 1933. In 1947-48, the artist was selected for a study tour of the USA, where he completed courses in graphic art and ceramics among others. In 1950, he joined the Faculty of Fine Arts at M. S. University, Baroda, as a Reader, and went on to become its Dean. Bendre held several solo exhibitions of his work between 1943 and 1985, and his works have been featured in numerous group exhibitions. He served as President of the Art Society of India and Vice-President of both the Bombay Art Society and the Lalit Kala Akademi. Bendre has also been honoured with the Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan Award by the Government of India in 1969 and 1992 respectively, and the Kalidas Award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1984. N. S. Bendre lived and worked in Mumbai till his death in 1992.
