Biography

Jungle animals and exotic vegetation appear frequently in Nikki Maloof's drawings, paintings, and collages. Often surrounded by luminous tropical hues, tigers, monkeys, and bats can seem either benign or sinister, reticent or theatrical, and adopt an anthropomorphic quality that discloses a sense of the artist's compassion for her subject matter. In other works the same lightness of hand hints at the somber and dejected aspects of the everyday. Maloof's works tend toward the familiar yet maintain a level of strangeness that produces their emotive quality. Nikki Maloof's work has been exhibited in group and solo shows, including Nino Mier, Jack Hanley Gallery, The Journal Gallery, Brooklyn, Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York, Salon 94, New York, Judith Charles Gallery, New York, and Brand New Gallery, Milan among others. She has received several awards, including the Helen W. Winternitz Award in Painting and Printmaking and the Gloucester Landscape Prize. She received her MFA from Yale University in 2011 and BFA from Indiana University in 2008.
