He grew up in an artistic family where his father Aldo, who was an artist himself, introduced Robert to the works of American Realists on trips to visit Carmel art galleries. Montanucci was encouraged to continue his art endeavors and as an art major had his first solo exhibit at Merced College in 1974. It was this sell-out show that launched his career as a professional artist and within several months, he was selling his work at a prestigious gallery in Carmel as the youngest artist ever to be accepted by the gallery.
