Biography

Canadian Artist Sandra Chevrier, who received a BA in visual and media arts from the University of Montreal and works from her Montreal based studio, is an illustrator, painter and street artist. By mixing watercolor paintings and comic book collage she creates hyper-realistic mixed-media portraits. As part of the music festival Lollapalooza’s and Urban Nations „We paint the music you love to hear“ project, Sandra teamed up with the indie-rock band „The National“ to create a multidimensional mural which sat on the facade of Berlin’s Olympic Stadium during the festival. At first glance, the outstanding, hyper-realistic quality of her work almost lures one into a deep comic-infused sleep before demanding your attention with the undulating force of it’s the deeper message. Her latest series „cage“is built upon the idea of women trying to find freedom from society’s twisted preconceptions of what they should or shouldn’t be and do. Chevrier depicts her female figures trapped inside society’s suffocating “Cages” of expectation; held captive by the limitations forced upon them by society and culture, and ultimately revealing how corrupt our perception of beauty has become.
