Shoshanna Weinberger
Biography
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Weinberger’s work relates to her Caribbean-American background and draws strongly on the complexity of heritage and identity that explores the psychology of beauty and cultural ambiguity. Weinberger was included in the 2013 Martinique Biennale; and five-time participant in the Jamaica Biennial, National Gallery of Jamaica. Awards/Fellowships: 2014 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant. 2015 Joan Mitchell Center, Artist-in-Residence, New Orleans. Awarded a 2016 Fellowship, New Jersey State Council on the Arts; 2017-2018, Project of Empty Space, Artist-in-Residence, Newark, NJ; 2019 Dawn Scott Memorial Award, presented by the National Gallery of Jamaica and Edward M. Gomez; appointed 2019-2020 McMillan Stewart Endowed Chair in Painting, Maryland Institute College of Art; and 2020 Sunroom Project Artist, Wavehill, Bronx, NY. Weinberger received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in 1995 and MFA from Yale University School of Art, in 2003. She lives and works in Newark, New Jersey.
