Stefan Kern is a German visual artist. Kern studied from 1988 to 1993 with Per Kirkeby, Ulrich Rückriem and Franz West at the State Academy of Fine Arts - Städelschule , Frankfurt am Main. His first solo exhibition in 1994 was the gallery Hammelehle and Ahrens, Stuttgart. In the academic year 2002/2003 Kern had a visiting professor at the Kunsthochschule Kassel, from 2003 to 2005 at the College of Fine Arts Hamburg. A professorship at the Ècole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Strasbourg, followed (until 2009). Kern's sculptures, objects, and installations are located at the interface between art and design. On the one hand, as offers for sitting or climbing, they are designed for the interaction between artwork and human being. However, the often strictly symmetrical, modular shapes, hard materials and flawless appearance on the other hand make this function doubtful. Their monochrome - often in white - lifts them out of their environment as a foreign body. Kern lives and works in Hamburg.
