1903 – 2011 • American

Biography

Steuben Glass Works was an influential American art glass manufacturer, founded in 1903 by Frederick Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes in Corning, New York. The company derived its name from Steuben County, where it was established. Carder, an Englishman with extensive experience in glass design, partnered with Hawkes, who owned a prominent cut glass firm, to create a factory that would produce high-quality glass blanks for cutting. This collaboration led to the creation of some of the most exquisite and collectible art glass pieces of the early 20th century. In 1918, Steuben was acquired by Corning Glass Works, becoming the Steuben Division. The company was renowned for its innovative designs and high-quality craftsmanship, producing both decorative and functional glassware. Steuben's glass pieces are characterized by their clarity, brilliance, and intricate designs, making them highly sought after by collectors. Despite changes in ownership and operations over the years, Steuben maintained its reputation for excellence in glassmaking. Although the original factory was closed in 2011, the Steuben brand continues to be celebrated for its contribution to American art glass, with pieces held in high regard in both private collections and museums.
