Biography

Susan Ziegler (b. 1974) is a Brooklyn-based visual artist. She explores the intersection of the natural world and urban experience through a practice that combines painting, printmaking, and collage. Her work is rooted in drawing from observation, searching for essential abstract forms in response to fleeting sensations and chance encounters in the environment. The imagery in her recent work comes from direct observation of botanical, architectural, and landscape elements. Ziegler has presented her paintings and works on paper in solo exhibitions at the One River School of Art + Design, Larchmont, NY, Resnick Gallery, Long Island University, Brooklyn, NY, Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia, PA and Nahcotta in Portsmouth, NH. Her work has been included in two-person and group exhibitions: USPS at (VA {A}DS) Free University of Tbilisi, Georgia, Brooklyn at the Long Beach Island Foundations of Arts and Sciences, NJ, Amoenus Locus and Inquiry: Five Painting Practices at Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia, PA, Uncharted: Imaginary Landscapes at the Hayes Valley Art Center in San Francisco, CA, among others. Her paintings can be found in collections throughout the US including GlaxoSmithKline and the US Department of State. Ziegler is currently an Associate Adjunct Professor at LIU Brooklyn. She teaches courses in Painting, Drawing, and Contemporary Art in the Social Context. Ziegler earned a B.A. from Amherst College and an M.F.A. in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2017, she was an artist-in-residence in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Process Space on Governor’s Island, NYC.
