Tim Wilson
Biography
Tim Wilson is a Brooklyn-based visual artist originally from Richmond, Virginia. He has had solo exhibitions at Sardine, Schroeder Romero, and 31 Grand in Brooklyn, New York. His works in group exhibitions have been presented at Jack Hanley, Recess, The Flag Art Foundation, and Peres Projects among others. Wilson received a B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and an M.F.A. from Yale University School of Art. He was an artist in residence at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Process Space on Governors Island in 2016 and recently a fellow with The Shandaken Projects: Paint School. This summer he will attend the Offshore Residency off the coast of Sardinia and Corsica. My hope is that the work I produce will provide myself and the viewer an intimate space in which to reflect on being in the world. These ideas are conjured through a simple, yet coded mix of color, form, process and representation. This ongoing methodology functions as a visual analog to those thoughts—a discursive mutation of process, driven by the tension between intuition and intentionality. I'm invested in a deep understanding of painting’s history and forging a dialogue with other artists and painters through the work itself. I think the best painting can be is when it acts as a sort of call and response—as if sending coded signals to those who speak the language. But also by tethering oneself to history in an effort to paint something new and meaningful—to literally paint a context for oneself with which to exist.
