Travis LeRoy Southworth
Biography
Travis LeRoy Southworth (b. 1979, Honolulu, Hawaii) is a visual artist and image correction specialist based in NYC. The content of his artwork is intrinsically connected to image manipulation in the beauty industry, in which he participates in as part of his day job. Southworth's art practice involves extracting bits of cultural detritus from portraits in the retouching process and employing methods of abstraction and erasure to explore contemporary culture’s fascination with its own dematerialization. Exhibitions include The Drawing Center (NYC), Martha Otero Gallery (Los Angeles), Dock Gallery (Basel), Mixed Greens Gallery (NYC), Thomas Robertello Gallery (Chicago), and The Bronx Museum of the Arts (Bronx). His work has been reviewed in the NY Times, Basler Zeitung, and Art Slant. Southworth participated in the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM 29) Program at The Bronx Museum of the Arts (2008) and received a BRIC Media Arts Fellowship (2009). He was awarded a NYFA Fellowship in Photography (2010) and residency in Switzerland that involved a project with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN (2013). Southworth holds a MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007) and a BFA from the University of Arizona (2004).
