Tzirel Kaminetzky
Tzirel received her MFA in Art Practice from the School of Visual Arts in 2016 and holds a BFA in both Fine Arts and Photography from Parsons, The New School for Design (2004) - during which she took a year long gap as a visiting student at Columbia University in NYC studying poetry and art history. Her work has been included in The New Yorker Passport to the Arts (2007; 2009), Williams College, PA (2003) and she has received several NPPA awards for her photojournalism while a photo editor. She works and resides in Brooklyn, NY. Some works are composed of inkjet photographic prints of a mundane, personal nature painted over with oils. The painted layer does not overtly reference or correlate with the photograph below it, however it depicts another moment, similarly quotidian in nature. For the base image she mainly selects outtakes, or a zoomed in detail - not a fully composed photo with clear aesthetic value. Finding the spare frame, low-tone, outtake, and detail most compelling, especially in service to the physical and conceptual underpinning to these works. Elements of the base photograph show through transparent areas of the painting - subtly discernible after longer observation. A still life of a shirt or a child’s hand might slowly reveal a laptop cord, or a radiator -- the miscellany of life that comes into focus in un-composed moments. Considering the contemporary dissolution of the single frame, the "moment" captured, and the borders of an image, she explores how "virtual living" dissolves this kind of differentiation. Tentatively teasing out the rupture and break down of visual and personal spaces under the overzealous thumb of digital technologies.
