Biography
Graduated in 1988 from the Department of Stage Design, the Central Academy of Drama, Beijing. While Wang’s own works evoke the quiet simplicity of that of his predecessors, the gentle colors and docile purity belie a shrewd commentary on modern Chinese discourse. Combining childhood memories with Cold War symbols, his paintings appropriate ideological motifs in service of a probing deconstruction of iconography. Wang’s importance does not lie in the historical dimensions of visual language, or by extension, in any subjective attitude of consciously rethinking history. Merely using such characteristics to quantify Wang Yin’s practice causes it to be summed up as purely tactical. These historical delusions rid Wang’s work of its usual complexity and trade his study of painting’s internal problems for a mood of superficial nostalgia. Wang Yin has exhibited widely in China and abroad, he currently works and lives in Beijing.
