1859 – 1899 • English

Biography

William Henry Hamilton Trood was an English painter born in 1859 in Taunton, Somerset. Known for his animal paintings, particularly of dogs, Trood's works often carried sentimental titles such as 'A Coveted Bone' and 'The Old Man's Darling'. His painting 'Cause and Effect', depicting puppies startled by a soda-water bottle, was particularly popular and found in many English homes. Despite being born deaf and mute, Trood achieved significant recognition in his lifetime. Trood also had a keen interest in Orientalism, traveling extensively in the East and Africa to collect arms and armor, which influenced some of his work. He spent many years working in Chelsea, London, before returning to Taunton, where he died of pneumonia in 1899 at the age of 39. His ability to capture the essence of his subjects, combined with his personal story, makes his work highly collectible and admired in the realm of Victorian animal painting.
