Société

About

Société began organizing projects under the name Max Hans Daniel in 2008 and, over the past nine years, has developed into one of today's most progressive contemporary art galleries. The majority of the gallery artists had their first solo exhibition at Société, and for most, Société is the only or the main gallery representing them. Société artists address the relationship between cultural production and consumption, the circulation of information, identity, and cultural history in an era highly mediated by technology. This framework has become widespread in the field of contemporary art, and the gallery artists–who offer important perspectives on these issues–have received increasing attention from international audiences and institutions. Société also tests the limits of what a gallery can produce and with whom. The gallery's publishing initiative Edition Société has worked with accomplished graphic designers on a number of acclaimed artist's books, including Kaspar Müller's Schätze der Erinnerung, which was awarded the 2016 Prize for the Most Beautiful Swiss Books, and Trisha Baga's The Great Pam, which received a full-page review in the April 2015 issue of Artforum. In addition, the gallery has produced 12" records with several contemporary musicians in an ongoing collaboration with musician Nic Xedro. Also, in May 2014, Société presented the German premiere of Cory Arcangel’s Dances For The Electric Piano at the Berliner Philharmonie. And at Frieze New York in 2016, Société handed its booth over to gallery artist Sean Raspet in collaboration with the US-based meal replacement drink company Soylent and Berlin-based fashion designer Nhu Duong. Société has exhibited at Art Basel / Art Basel Miami Beach / Art Basel Hong Kong / Frieze London / Frieze New York / Independent New York / Independent Brussels / Art Cologne / Art Brussels / Gallery Weekend Berlin / and abc Berlin among other locations.
